The Problem with Hoping Rapists Will Be Raped

igather:

ihatethismess:

To say that a rapist should be raped is to say that rape is a legitimate act of revenge and justice. It is to establish a set of circumstances under which rape is acceptable.

Rape as a form of revenge is already a too common aspect of our world. Many rapes are committed for precisely that reason. Rape is used as an act of “revenge” against a partner for being unfaithful. It’s used as revenge against women who reject sexual advances by men who feel they have the right to their bodies, or who are otherwise “being a bitch.” Rape is wielded as a “punishment” for dressing a certain way, drinking, talking back, working as a sex worker, and much, much more.

Rape is a violent crime for which there is never an excuse. Unlike with murder and assault, there is never such a thing as raping in self-defense. Everyone has a right to their own body — this has to be a basic staple of the anti-sexual violence movement. No one deserves to have their body violated, ever — no matter what they’ve done that might be interpreted by someone as provocation, no matter how angry they’ve made us, no matter how inhuman we perceive them to be, no matter how little else we feel they deserve, no matter how horrible of a person they have been.

You want to know what happiness is? It’s waking up in the middle of the night for no reason, shifting under the blankets and feeling the heat of the person next to you. You turn around and see them in their most peaceful, innocent, and vulnerable state. They breathe as though the weight of the world lays on anyone’s shoulder but their own. You smile and kiss their face gently before turning back around and somehow, an involuntary grin forms on your face. Just before you drift off to sleep, you feel an arm wrap around your waist and you know it doesn’t get any better than this.
The petition defending Polanski doesn’t even address his crime. Instead, it calls it a “case of morals.” That expression — a “case of morals” — takes the anti-violence movement back about a hundred years. Rape is not a question of morals. In fact it’s not even a question.

SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF HOOPLA

I’m currently looking for publications to include in material packets for a Sexuality Education Advocacy Training program and was led toward this. The following are from In Their Own Words: What Abstinence Only Until Marriage Programs Say, from SIECUS.

“The first player spins the cylinder, points the gun to his/her head, and pulls the trigger. He/she has only
one in six chances of being killed. But if one continues to perform this act, the chamber with the bullet will ultimately fall into position under the hammer, and the game ends as one of the players dies. Relying on condoms is like playing Russian roulette”

“…No matter how strong a condom is, it won’t protect you from a broken heart.”

“No competent educator should use the term ‘safe sex’ to imply that condoms make sexual activity
safe…What do you think using the term ‘safe sex’ implies in a discussion of condoms. Do condoms make
sexual activity moral? Legal? Healthy?”

“Teacher’s Question: “What are the possible consequences of choosing to have an abortion?”
Suggested Answers: “Feelings of regret, shame, sadness, guilt; physical complications for girl; continued
feelings of shame, sadness, regret; death of fetus.””

“Men sexually are like microwaves and women sexually are like crockpots..”
